My son is autistic with sensory issues. Haircuts are a nightmare for us, and it hasn’t been helped by waiting to go back to a salon because of COVID. We’ve had a few botched attempts at home, and we decided it was time to take the risk and put him back in professional hands. I called in advance to learn how the facility was handling COVID and was put at ease by Janelle. We also came up with a plan to set him up for success. When we arrived today, Janelle was so patient while he got acclimated to the environment. He had a pretty epic breakdown when it was time to get in the chair and she got down on the floor with him and talked him off the ledge. She got him comfortable with the comb, then worked up to the water bottle and eventually the scissors. It was a long process but she worked with him to get consent every step of the way and eventually we managed to get a complete haircut!! I was so impressed, she was kind and compassionate and incredibly skilled. Janelle made what could have been a traumatic experience into an “adventure” per my son. When we got in the car he told me he liked Janelle, and that she helped him make his hair soft. That’s a ringing endorsement, I promise. She is a hero and will be our go to stylist from now on!
